NANTUCKET – In celebration of the Nantucket Arts Festival, a theatrical performance about the Greater Light property will be held in the historic building Monday.

The Nantucket Historical Association presents “Hanna at Greater Light” at 4 p.m. inside the Greater Light property on Howard Street.

The performance will detail the work of Hanna Monaghan and her sister Gertrude to transform a livestock barn into their summer home and artistic retreat in the 1930s.

Nantucket artist and photographer Beverly Hall will bring the spirit of Hanna to life by reading Hanna’s writings and memoirs.

Hall says from the moment she entered Greater Light in the 1970s she felt a tug at her heartstrings for a sense of place and felt she was home.

Greater Light, which is just steps away from the Civil War monument, recalls the days of the island’s art colony in the 1930s.

The NHA restored the property and reopened it to the public in 2011.

Tickets for the performance are $5 per person and can be purchased at www.nha.org/tickets.
