HYANNIS – With temperatures expected to be near 90 degrees today and Thursday, the Animal Rescue League is reminding pet owners to be mindful of the heat to keep animals cool.
Pets should be left at home in a low-humidity and temperature controlled room when possible and cold water should be made accessible at all times to prevent dehydration.
If animals must be outside they should be in a shady and breezy spot.
Animals should also never be left alone in a parked car as temperatures can jump to over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes.
Short-snouted dogs, such as pugs or bulldogs, can also suffer from respiratory distress during periods of high humidity.
When walking dogs, remember that hot asphalt can burn paw pads.
Animal exercise should also be limited to when temperatures are the coolest early in the morning or at dusk.
