Pet Precautions Needed For Frigid Temperatures

ORLEANS – The well-being of pets is threatened when the weather turns frigid like it has in recent weeks.

Mike DeFina, the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s Media Relations Officer, said a pet’s normal routine may need to be altered.

“When temperatures get to where they are now, it’s always a good idea to keep your pets in mind and shorten outdoor activities like bathroom breaks and walks.  Try to keep your pets inside as much as possible.”

The ARL says  some things to remember are letting your dog’s coat grow out, while dogs with shorter coats can benefit from sweaters and boots.

Always wipe off the paws and stomach to remove any chemicals used in treating sidewalks and roads, and remember to never leave a pet in a cold car, which is also illegal.

DeFina points out that there is an important step that many people are unaware of.

“Cats, mice and others do tend to crawl into the engine compartment for warmth, so people want to make sure to check their engine before starting the car,” he said.

Always remember, if it’s too cold for you outside, it’s also too cold for your pets.
