Pilgrim Hit With Two More Violations in First-Quarter Report

PLYMOUTH – Just days after two high pressure safety valves failed a required test at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, the plant has been hit with two more violations by federal regulators.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says both citations are of “very low safety significance.” The violations were detailed in the NRC’s first-quarter inspection report of the plant.

Regulators say operators failed to implement internal procedure steps in preparedness for a controlled reactor shutdown. Officials also said that Entergy didn’t make sure there were actions in place to make sure the station will be in compliance with spent fuel storage design requirements after September of this year.

According to the NRC, Pilgrim’s spent fuel pool contains 4,963 panels.

The plant was also cited for not properly notifying the NRC about a plant shutdown in December. The shutdown occurred on December 16 and regulators were not formally notified until February 13. Policy dictates that notification is needed within four hours after a reactor power-down is initiated. Operators took the station offline when leaks were discovered in the station’s main steam isolation valves.

Pilgrim is scheduled to close in 2019.
