Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum Receives Grant Funds for Bradford Street Project

PROVINCETOWN – A $200,000 grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council is moving a large-scale project in Provincetown forward.

The Bradford Access Project, is designed to better connect the monument and museum with the town. A funicular, or inclined elevator, will transport pedestrians from Bradford Street, to the base of the monument atop Pole Hill.

The MCC funds will assist in the design, development and building process.

“It’s transformative,” PMPM Executive Director David Weidner said.

The proposed project is all well timed, as the town continues to get ready for the 400th anniversary celebration of the Pilgrim landing in Provincetown in 2020.

“It’s the first really large project to occur here at the monument grounds since the groundbreaking in 1907,” said Weidner.

While still needing approval from the town, construction of the project is expected to begin later in 2018, and be completed in 2019.

“We want to be prepared for our visitors, we want to be able to provide access to them and we think that our brand new Bradford Access project will allow folks to visit, enjoy our grounds and be present here at the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum.”
