PROVINCETOWN – The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum will update its stories of the Mayflower Pilgrims and the native Wampanoag people with a new exhibit.
It will focus on the history of the Wampanoag, their presence on Cape Cod prior to the arrival of the Mayflower Pilgrims, their interactions with the Pilgrims and the significance of that time period in history.
The museum is partnering with the Mashpee-based Smoke Sygnals, a Native American creative agency, for the exhibit.
PMPM has set a goal to open the new exhibit in April 2020 to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower Pilgrims first landing in Provincetown.
The exhibit includes interactive videos and panels to educate visitors on the accurate story of the local Wampanoag people and their interactions with the new visitors.
President of the PMPM Board of Trustees, Courtney Hurst, says the real story about the importance of the local native people on the Outer Cape and their meeting with the Pilgrims needs to be told.
The exhibit will cover four time periods, including pre-colonial life, the Mayflower Compact, relations between the Wampanoag and Pilgrims and King Phillip’s War.
