PROVINCETOWN – The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum are back the night before Thanksgiving for another Pilgrim Monument Annual Lighting and new Monumental Photo Contest.
The lighting ceremony is typically held the day before Thanksgiving to commemorate the first landing of the Pilgrims in the New World in Provincetown Harbor in November of 1620.
As a beacon of tolerance and hope for over 100 years, the Pilgrim Monument honors those throughout the world unable to experience acceptance most Americans are accustomed to.
The historic 252-foot structure will hang 3,100 lights from 19 strands from top to bottom, and will shine every night through January 6, 2019, representing the five weeks the Pilgrims spent in Provincetown before setting sail for Plymouth.
A new Monumental photo contest will also be held this year. PMPM says anybody interested in participating can send their best photo of the monument lit up. The contest will run until January 13, 2019.
