Pilgrim Owner to Close Michigan Nuclear Plant

COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — The owner of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station plans to permanently close another plant in its nuclear fleet, the Palisades nuclear power plant in southwestern Michigan in 2018.

New Orleans-based Entergy Corp. and Michigan-based utility, Consumers Energy, say they’ve agreed to end a power purchase agreement for the plant that year. They say the move will save Consumers’ customers as much as $172 million and affect about 600 employees.

Palisades marks the latest station owned by Entergy to announce plans to close down. Pilgrim is slated to close in 2019. The company made the announcement last year, saying the station is no longer financially viable.

Entergy planned to shut down central New York reactor Fitzpatrick before striking a deal to sell the plant.

Entergy also owns the Vermont Yankee station, which ceased operations in 2014 and is in the process of decommissioning.
