Pilgrim to Receive Violation from NRC for Security Issue

PLYMOUTH – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will issue at least one violation to the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth, in its next quarterly report.

NRC sent a letter to plant owner Entergy Corp. about a security issue from mid-March.

In an email, NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan said that, “We are constrained as far as what we can say about this because it involves security”.

“We can tell you that it was identified by Entergy and that the company took immediate action to address any vulnerabilities, and that the issue was entered into the plant’s corrective action program. We launched our investigation after being notified by Entergy of the issue.”

Sheehan added that it was concluded that the issue represented a Level IV finding, which is equivalent to a “green” finding, or if very low safety/security significance.

In response to the finding, Entergy spokesman Patrick O’Brien stated that “the incident in question involves security-sensitive matters, and details cannot be publicly released under NRC’s regulations”.

“Generally, however what we can say is that site personnel identified the issue and took immediate corrective actions to address any potential vulnerability. The issue was entered into our corrective action program and a notification was made to the NRC about the incident.”

O’Brien stated that “we are committed to continuing to improve our regulatory performance and complying with all regulatory requirements and will respond to the NRC as instructed in the letter.”
