Pilot Program Eyed for Outer Cape Route 6 Safety Improvements

constructionWELLFLEET – Ideas continue to be floated around on how to make the Outer Cape stretch of Route 6 safer for drivers, after the road has seen head on collisions and even fatalities in recent months.

State and local officials have been holding meetings on the topic, and are hoping to hone in on some ideas to bring forward to the public.

Officials are working to identify parts of the road to launch a pilot program to try out some safety improvements.

“We’re going to go out with some members of the town and maybe identify a few spots in town that could serve as a pilot program,” said Wellfleet Police Chief Ron Fisette.

Some of the proposed engineering improvements include adding rumble strips or stanchions to the middle of the roadway.

“I’m intrigued by the rumble strips. I think that’s a low presence that can have a lot of bang for your buck,” Fisette said. “Hearing those rumble strips may serve a nice reminder.”
