Plan to Extend Rail Trail to Provincetown Gains Ground

bikeaPROVINCETOWN – A committee is working to put forward a master plan to expand the Cape Cod Rail Trail to Provincetown.

The group is working with towns on the Outer Cape, the Cape Cod Commission, and the National Seashore on the proposal.

“Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce has been following the evolution of why tourists come to Cape Cod. Number one is still the beaches but number 2 and climbing fast is bicycling,” he said.

Provincetown resident Roger Chauvette, a member of the committee, said the long term plan is to not only expand the trail to Provincetown but to eventually expand its western terminus from Dennis to the Cape Cod Canal.

“So a tourist can come onto Cape Cod with a bike and will be able to actually visit all the towns simply by going by bicycle and not having to use a vehicle at all,” he said.

Chauvette said they hope to have an official master plan by the end of 2015.
