Planned Nantucket Playground to have Science-Based Theme

NANTUCKET – A proposed new inclusive playground on Nantucket will incorporate a science-based theme.

The Discovery Playground is a STEAM-based outdoor play, fitness and gathering space at Hinsdale Park that will focus on science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.

The Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association and Nantucket Islands Land Bank project has received support from the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, Community Health Initiative, and the Town of Nantucket/Community Preservation Act.

The project still requires an affirmative vote by residents at Town Meeting April 1 for more than $800,000 in Community Preservation Act funding.

The playground is planned for a Nantucket Land Bank property located on Old South Road across the street from the State Forest.

An estimated 375 children are within walking distance of the playground. Even more children are expected with the completion of the nearby Richmond Great Point Housing Development and the Ticcoma Green Workforce Rental Community.

The planned facility would be open daily from sunrise to sunset.

The park is scheduled to be completed by the end of October.
