SANDWICH – The Old King’s Highway Historic District Committee has caused some controversy in Sandwich over a proposed Vietnam monument.

The committee recently discussed the plan to place the memorial monument on Eaton Square near Town Hall and felt the area was not the best location.

The committee also believed the design was too modern for the district.

Sandwich State Representative Randy Hunt believes the historic district committee did not have all the facts regarding the planned monument.

“The town has a plan for Eaton Square which will revive a couple of the memorials that are in the corner and put them in a place where they can be seen and create a space for this Vietnam memorial as well as future potential memorials,” Hunt said.

Hunt believes once the committee hears all of the plans the town has for the location, along with comments from the public, members will change their minds.

“We’ll be dedicating this memorial on Veterans Day as originally planned,” Hunt said.

Clark Haddad American Legion Post 188 Commander Ray Tourville said the town is supporting the monument and is optimistic the issue will get resolved.

“They been open armed with this. They love it and they want to be a part of it,” Tourville said.

“It’s happened and they gave us all the funding and we are ready to go. We just need to get through this little speed bump and we’ll be on with it.”

Tourville is optimistic that the committee will change their minds as well.

“It’s a shame that it has gone through all of this because you embarrass a lot of people along the way,” he said.

Tourville will be one of a few members of the legion post to attend the next meeting of the historic district committee.

The committee, which refused to comment on the issue, will again discuss the memorial on September 12 at 6:30 p.m.
