HARWICH – Pleasant Bay Community Boating will hosting its 2019 fund-raiser — “Sailabration Gala” — at the Wequassett Resort to close out the month.
The evening will feature a sumptuous raw bar and hors d’oeuvres, lite fare offerings and complimentary wine and beer from local brewers and vineyards. There will be a “Heads or Tails” Raffle, and a live auction,
Featured speaker Jo Ruxton, producer of the film, A Plastic Ocean, and co-founder of the global nonprofit The Plastic Oceans Foundation U.K., will walk her audience through the issue of plastic pollution in the ocean and its harmful effects on the marine ecosystem and human health.
A passionate advocate for the oceans, Ruxton worked for the BBC National History Unit’s diving team for many years and produced and directed underwater sequences from the inception of the award-winning “Blue Planet” series in 1997. Disappointed in the lack of conservation messages in the BBC films she worked on, she left to work independently.
She began to learn about the problems of plastic waste in the oceans — to start, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area halfway between California and Hawaii, now three times the size of France.
It was then she knew she had her story.
Yet eight years elapsed before the multi-award winning film was finally released in 60 countries (2017 in the US) and in 15 languages. Ms. Ruxton clearly identifies with those who selflessly stalk local beaches for plastic (and other) refuse and will enthusiastically entertain questions from audience members after her talk.
Proceeds from the event will support PBCB’s extensive sailing, marine education and environmental stewardship programs.
The “Sailabration Gala” kicks off on Thursday, June 27, and runs from 6:00 p.m. through 9:00 p.m. Wequassett is located at 2173 Route 28 in Harwich.
