PROVINCETOWN – The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum will host a special screening of the 1937 classic “Captain Courageous” next month.
The event is Sunday, December 9 from 3 to 5 p.m.
Based on a novel by Rudyard Kipling, “Captain Courageous” tells the story of a spoiled son of an American business tycoon who falls off the trans-Atlantic steamship mid journey.
He is rescued by a Portuguese-American fisherman from Gloucester and becomes acclimated to the fishing lifestyle.
A panel discussion on the home-life of fisherman families and the experiences of those out at sea will follow the film.
Greater than half of Provincetown’s population was comprised of Portuguese fishermen and their families in the 19th century.
Descendants continue to come together to celebrate the culture and heritage with the annual Blessing of the Fleet during the Portuguese Festival.
Admission and parking is free and there will be a cash bar. Donations are also welcome.
