Police, Fire Officials Seize Fireworks in Barnstable, Dennis

hy070315aBARNSTABLE – The Fourth of July weekend kept state fire officials busy.

There were multiple large scale fireworks confiscations across the state, including two on Cape Cod. Fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts.

Police seized between $7,000 and $8,000 of illegal fireworks in Dennis. The State Police Bomb Squad and the Department of Fire Services are assisting local officials with the disposal of those fireworks.

Thousands of dollars of fireworks were also seized after police pulled over a U-Haul on Route 6 in Barnstable, after fire officials received a tip about the truck, which was bound for Hyannis. The State Police Bomb Squad also assisted with that seizure.

The District Attorney’s office will be filling charges in connection with the seizures, according to the fire marshal’s office.

A number of people were injured across the state as a result of personal fireworks displays. Fire officials say there were no incidents at professional displays.

Fire officials also believe a number of fires were sparked by fireworks in Berkshire, Bristol, and Plymouth Counties.
