CHATHAM – The missing Chatham shark has been found.

Janice Rogers, a member of the Chatham Merchants’ Association Board of Directors, reports that the shark reported stolen from an outdoor art display has been returned.

The shark is one of 43 shark artworks on display on the Chatham Library lawn. It went missing last night.

Word spread fast around town about the missing piece and people in the village were upset about it, Rogers said.

Rogers says two individuals reported seeing the shark in woods off Library Lane, not far from the library.

The piece, weighing about 20 to 30 pounds, was slightly damaged but otherwise in good shape.

That is good news for artist Rich Benson, who crafted the piece.

“A bit damaged, but we are thrilled to have it back.  Rich Benson, the artist was heartbroken and is very happy the shark has been recovered,” Rogers said.

The association had been planning to look at video of the scene to see if they could identify the thief. They were also offering a reward for its return.

Rogers credits Chatham Police Officer John Whittle and the entire Chatham Police Department with solving the case.
