Polito Signs Community Compact with Chatham; Discusses Wellfleet Green Energy Project

Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito and Chatham Selectman Chairman Cory Metters sign a Community Compact Agreement Wednesday at Town Hall.

CHATHAM – Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito spent yesterday afternoon and evening on Cape Cod attending several events.

Polito joined Chatham officials for a community compact signing at Town Hall.

The voluntary program strengthens the relationship between communities and the state through best practices and better ways to improve services at the local level.

Chatham’s compact includes best practices in Human Resources and Financial Management.

“In Chatham for instance, they are working on a wage and classification plan so they can attract good talent to their local workforce here in municipal government,” she said.

“And they are looking at a capital improvement plan so that they can figure out what the infrastructure is in the community and how they need to fund improvements over the long-term.”

The compact signing puts the town in a position to receive state technical assistance for the implementation of the best practices within the required two-year time frame.

“For a community that has a high bond rating, they are already doing a lot of good things, but there’s always more that you can work on,” Polito said. “So I’m very pleased that they are now the 297th community to sign in out of the 351 cities and towns in this Commonwealth.”

Town Manager Jill Goldsmith said the designation will put Chatham in a more competitive position for state grants with funding priority or bonus points on grant submittals as a Compact Community.

Chatham was the final community on the Cape to sign a Community Compact agreement.

Polito then headed to Wellfleet to discuss clean energy and energy efficiency projects with town officials which received $260,423 in funding through the Department of Energy Resources Green Communities Program.

“We’ll be looking at the project that will allow one of their buildings to convert from a gas and fuel fired boiler to something far more efficient,” Polito said.

The Lt. Gov. finished the evening on the Mid Cape in Hyannis at a fundraising event at Trader Ed’s for 2nd Barnstable State Representative Will Crocker (R-Centerville).
