Pope to Deliver 1st US Message

AP LogoWASHINGTON (AP) — Pope Francis will speak to America this morning and deliver his remarks while on the White House lawn.

The pope is meeting today with President Barack Obama and then he’ll speak later to America’s bishops.

Some 15,000 people are expected at today’s White House arrival ceremony.

While in Washington, the pope will canonize a Spanish friar who brought the Catholic faith to California.

Pope Francis is to celebrate the Mass of canonization for Junipero (hoo-NEE’-peh-roh) Serra in Spanish.

Several thousand of the 25,000 tickets to the event were set aside for Spanish-speaking people, many from California.

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception has erected a temporary sanctuary on the east portico for the Mass.
