SANDWICH – The popular weeping willow tree in Sandwich overlooking Shawme Lake will soon be removed.
Selectmen decided to remove the tree based on its root structure causing damage to a nearby fish ladder, despite opposition from several residents.
Selectman Frank Pannorfi said the town was in violation of federal dam requirements because of damage caused by the tree.
As of last week, the millrace had been re-routed to allow work on the granite wall next to Sandwich town hall. Work may not be completed until next fall, 2017. The tree is expected to come down sometime next year.
