Potential Federal Cuts Makes Barnstable Municipal Airport Manager Leary

BARNSTABLE – The Barnstable Municipal Airport Manager said he is concerned about possible cuts made in the Trump administration’s proposed federal budget.

Bud Breault said that cuts made in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) budgets could negatively affect not only the Barnstable airport, but others in the region.

The FAA’s reauthorization bill, up for renewal, could see slashes to continued funding for “contract” air traffic control towers.

This classification of tower denotes that its workers are paid by separate contracts with the FAA.

“If that program were affected, and our tour, as well as Martha’s Vineyard and New Bedford were affected at the same time, it would drastically affect aviation in the local area,” Breault said.

Air traffic control privatization could, according to him, prioritize certain types of flights over others.

Finally, he said the “Essential Air Service Subsidy Program” under the FAA could heavily affect one of Barnstable Municipal Airport’s key tenants, Cape Air.

Breault said much of their services are provided through that program.
