Preliminary D-Y School Budget Sees Hefty Increase for Yarmouth

Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School

DENNIS – The preliminary school budget for the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District increases Yarmouth’s share at a much higher percentage than Dennis.

The current $58 million budget was presented to Dennis Selectmen recently by the school committee.

Yarmouth’s portion of the budget is almost $32 million which is 5.8 percent more than last year compared to Dennis’ $16 million share, which is only up 2.3 percent.

The larger increase for Yarmouth is due to a trend of less school-aged children coming from Dennis.

“We want to improve student achievement,” said Larry Azer, the D-Y director of finance and operations. “We want to maintain and enhance programs. Obviously, we don’t want to be in a situation where we are cutting things. We want to keep the things that are working and we want to enhance and grow from there.”

Azer said the district first creates a level function budget which takes all the current programs and expenses and what those same services would cost next year.

“This includes all the contractual salary agreements, includes any cost of living or inflationary factors and things like that,” he said. “To keep doing that next year it’s an increase of a little more than 3 percent.”

The level function budget is almost $59 million.

“We want to keep doing the things that we are doing now,” said Carol Woodbury, the D-Y superintendent of schools. “Yes, we do look at our programs on a regular basis. We do make decisions about this program’s working – this program isn’t – we get rid of that – keep this – so on and so forth.”

The school committee will discuss the budget again on March 6.

A scheduled meeting with Yarmouth Selectmen for next week has been postponed.
