Preparations Begin for Cotuit Bay Channel Dredging

BARNSTABLE – Operations are beginning this week for Phase 2 of the project to dredge the Cotuit Bay Entrance Channel and the western tip of Sampson’s Island.

The project is a collaboration between Barnstable’s Department of Public Works, the Barnstable Clean Water Coalition, Massachusetts Audubon Society and Barnstable County.

Dredging is anticipated to start around October 30.

The project will widen the existing channel by about 130 feet. The dredged material will be used for beach nourishment on the southern side of the eastern end of the island and for a habitat enhancement area.

Dredging operations will be ongoing Mondays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting, until the completion of this phase of the project.

Operations are expected to be completed by January 14.

Boaters are advised to use caution while navigating the waters around the dredging operation.
