SANDWICH – Federal, state, and local organizations will be conducting prescribed burns at Camp Edwards this week.
The fires will be lit on Wednesday and Thursday, weather permitting.
The burns serve as a training opportunity for local firefighters and also meet grassland habitat resource management goals.
The Camp Edwards fire management program aims to use the prescribed burns to duplicate natural fires in maintaining the ecological community at the camp. There are 37 state listed species of plants and animals in the area.
Residents who see smoke and activity in the area should not be alarmed.
