Presidential Election Brought Record Vote in Massachusetts

KA_MA Mass Primary Election Voting Orleans_2016 winter_030116_014BOSTON (AP) — The state’s top elections official says the Nov. 8 election brought a record turnout in Massachusetts.

Roughly 30 percent of voters cast their ballots early, exceeding expectations for the state’s first early voting period.

Secretary of State William Galvin said Monday that slightly more than 3.4 million votes were cast overall, eclipsing the previous record of 3.18 million votes in 2012.

Democrat Hillary Clinton received nearly 2 million votes to less than 1.1 million for Republican president-elect Donald Trump. The Libertarian and Green-Rainbow candidates received about 185,000 votes combined. Other voters wrote-in names or blanked the presidential race.

Galvin says votes cast for presidential electors will be sent to the Governor’s Council for certification later this week.

The Electoral College members will cast their official votes on Dec. 19.
