SANDWICH – A local climate action group will host a public rally and educational event in Sandwich Sunday at 1:00.
The non-profit, non-partisan Conservation Law Foundation and Mass Sierra Club will present speakers who are experts on the subject.
The rally will be at the north end of Freezer Road, adjacent to the site of the proposed Canal 3 fracked-gas plant at the Cape Cod Canal.
Chris Powicki, a member of 350Mass Cape Cod, said one of the many issues with the proposal is that it will use, “fossil fuels, likely fracked gas, which has a life cycle and footprint equivalent to that of burning coal.”
The construction of the plant is almost fully permitted. The CLF has mounted a legal challenge which is delaying construction.
Powicky says the ultimate goal goes a step further. “It would be nice to see the facility shut down. We don’t need new natural gas capacity. There are other renewable energy options and battery storage is becoming economically viable,” he said.
Organizers said it’s a mistake to invest in projects which rely on fossil fuels and, if built, the plant would foul the air, impact health and release greenhouse gases for decades.
Instead, they would like to see investments in renewable energy that will create jobs and protect the health of future generations.
