Provincetown 400 Holds Launch Event

PROVINCETOWN – The group charged with planning events and programs to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims arrival in Provincetown held their first community event last month.

Provincetown 400 officials revealed their new website and gave an overview of their plans leading up to the big celebration in the summer of 2020. The event was titled “All Aboard with Provincetown 400.”

A similar organization is working in Plymouth to mark the anniversary of the Pilgrims landing and settlement of Plymouth colony.

Provincetown 400 plans to launch a fundraising effort next year to support a series of programs that will coincide with the celebration.

“These activities will really serve as a way to educate, entertain, and provoke thought about the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag,” said Lisa Giuffre, the Executive Director of Provincetown 400.

One of the major elements of the celebration in Provincetown will focus on the Mayflower Compact, which was signed in Provincetown Harbor before the Pilgrims sailed on to Plymouth.

“It’s clear that there’s a lot of interest beyond Provincetown in all that the events of 1620 mean,” Giuffre said.

Organizers see the celebration as a way to highlight the history of Provincetown following the Pilgrims departure for Plymouth. The group plans to celebrate P’Town’s Portuguese and LGBT communities while also recognizing the vibrant arts and culture history in town.
