PROVINCETOWN – Residents and visitors to Cape Cod are being invited to Provincetown to view and updated version of the popular exhibition “The Great Provincetown Summer 1916.”
The presentation is organized by the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum, and now includes pieces to bring it into 2017.
New features include an original Roll of Honor of 306 Provincetown residents, male and female, who served in World War I, and an original Liberty Bond Poster.
The exhibit include a 35mm newsreel from 1916, spotlighting the history of the Provincetown as the first landing of the Mayflower Pilgrims and its emergence as a haven for artists.
Also on display is a series of newspaper cartoons from the era that depicted the town’s three main art schools at a time when Provincetown was establishing itself as an artist’s community.
The museum will also display a copy of an original article that ran in the Boston Sunday Globe Magazine more than a century ago, on August 27th, 1916 with the headline “Biggest Art Colony in the World in Provincetown.”
The Provincetown Museum is located at the base of the Monument. As always, standing exhibits highlight the arrival of the Mayflower Pilgrims, the town’s rich maritime history, the early days of modern American theater in Provincetown, as well as the building of the monument.
