PROVINCETOWN – The Provincetown Select Board has been presented with a potential new design for the renovations of the Pilgrims’ First Landing Park.
The plans come potentially just in time for the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s arrival.
If the project is approved, the park could be completed in time for the 2020 celebration.
Currently, the park is a small attraction with several benches and personalized sponsored-bricks that bare small messages.
“We’re here to try and salvage a project that has fallen by the wayside since the departure of the former town manager David Panagore,” said Public Works Director Richard Waldo.
There have been multiple ideas to rejuvenate the park since spring, but they were not going to be able to be finished by the 2020 celebration.
The concept by Waldo and landscape designer Todd Westrick is a much simpler rendition—making it much easier and faster to complete than the earlier designs.
Westerick also said the design will be cheaper and easier to maintain by the town moving forward after construction is over.
While not opposed to the designs, the Select Board was concerned about the design not having input by any other town agencies like the Public Landscape Committee before coming to the board for review.
“This is such an important piece of property, it just seems like it might have been a good idea to open it up even before you had a plan to present,” said Select Board Member Lise King.
“This is not just a roundabout enclosed by a rotary—this is a big heart-centered space for the residents of this town and the visitors, too.”
The board will have a joint meeting with the Public Landscape Committee on September 23. A public hearing was scheduled for October 15.
