Provincetown to Receive Visit from Replica Mayflower in 2020

PROVINCETOWN – The Mayflower will once again land in Provincetown.

As part of the town’s 400th anniversary celebration, the Mayflower II will sail from Plimoth Plantation to Provincetown in September 2020.

The vessel, which is a major Plimoth Plantation exhibit, is a full-scale replica of the ship which brought English Colonists to the new world in 1620.

The vessel is expected to be spend a week in America’s First Destination, according to David Weidner, the executive director of the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum.

“We’ll be able to view her in the harbor, see her from the top of the monument and welcome her back to this lovely, lovely village,” Weidner said.

The tentative schedule has the ship arriving on September 7 and departing on September 14.

During the visit, the Mayflower II will host a historical re-enactment of the Signing of the Mayflower Compact in Provincetown Harbor in 1620.

The vessel will also be open for public visitation throughout the week.

“We have nearly 100,000 people who come to the Pilgrim Monument every year and we want to educate them about the life of the Mayflower Pilgrims, the life of the Wampanoag and how the starting government with the Mayflower Compact originated here,” Weidner said.

The ship’s visit is scheduled to coincide with the General Society of Mayflower Descendants special signature week.

The commemorative event for the week will be a Memorial Service and Wreath Laying in the Harbor, followed by a program at the base of the Pilgrim Monument.

“Part of the commemorative events are to reflect on the past and engage discussion and dialogue about the future,” Weidner said.

Currently, the Mayflower II is in Mystic, Connecticut for major renovations.

The ship is expected to return home to Plymouth by fall of 2019. Since it was first launched in 1956, roughly 25 million people have toured the Mayflower replica.
