PROVINCETOWN – Provincetown voters supported a plan that would provide universal pre-k education to families in town at this week’s town meeting.

Residents approved $308,000 for preschool and pre-k services, sending a proposition 2 1/2 override to the ballot at town election. It’s expected the average tax bill would increase by $100 should the proposal pass.

Proponents argued universal pre-k would make it easier for families to raise children in Provincetown.

In other action, voters approved funding for a number of capital items, including shoreline protection and beach nourishment projects, sidewalk and pier improvements, and new vehicles for a number of town departments.

Residents also passed new zoning rules aimed at tightening restrictions on franchise businesses.

Provincetown will also implement a new ban on plastic straws and polystyrene products. It will go into effect in June of 2019.

Voters passed a non-binding petition supporting a name change from the Board of Selectmen to Select Board to make the town’s top governing body gender neutral.
