Listening Sessions Held for Mashpee Rotary Corridor Study

MASHPEE – A notorious traffic nightmare in the summer months, the Mashpee Rotary, is in the conceptual stages of getting a makeover.

The Cape Cod Commission and staff from the Town of Mashpee held two public listening sessions at the Mashpee Public Library on Thursday to discuss the Mashpee Rotary Corridor Study.

Cape Cod Commission Transportation Program Manager Steven Tupper said the study will include the rotary and all approaching roadways.

“Certainly, it’s an important regional intersection and there’s a lot of commercial activity and community destinations in the area, so we’re looking at improvements to improvements to the roadway to allow those sort of activities to happen more easily and more safely,” Tupper said.

“It could be a small project in terms of re-striping up to complete replacement of the rotary. Anything that reduces congestion, improves safety and that improves multimodal accommodations we’ll take a look at.”

The Mashpee Rotary is a five-leg, major regional transportation node with the intersections of Route 28, Route 151, Great Neck Road North, and Great Neck Road South. The rotary, and its approaches, have been identified as a priority for investigation due to congestion and safety issues.

The focus of the two sessions was to gather public feedback on issues, opportunities, and visions for the future of the corridor.

The Cape Cod Commission, under the Unified Planning Work Program, is conducting the study for the corridor with the goal of developing context-sensitive improvements that will provide safe and convenient access within the study area for all users of the roadway, including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and motorists.

“We’ll be concluding the report by the end of the calendar year, and then after that the state, who owns the roadway, can consider bringing the project forward,” said Tupper.

A third public meeting will be held in late summer to discuss identified potential improvement alternatives.
