BARNSTABLE – In an attempt to reduce rabies on Cape Cod, the USDA Wildlife Services’ Massachusetts Rabies Program is placing vaccine/bait packages in the woods of the Upper, Mid and Lower Cape.
The vaccine was distributed starting Monday in Sandwich, Mashpee, Barnstable, Yarmouth, Dennis, Brewster and Harwich. Distribution will end on November 18.
There will be 242 Oral Rabies Vaccination stations throughout much of the Mid-Cape with each station containing 60 vaccine block baits that will be checked over a three-week period.
The USDA is asking anyone that comes in contact with the vaccine/bait package to use a glove or towel to pick it up and throw it into the woods or dispose of the bait in the trash.
