CHATHAM – The V.F.W. Post 8607, known as the Brown-James-Buck post, will hold a fundraiser on tonight to kick-off a major capital campaign.

The “Raise the Roof” event will feature live music and a dinner, all to raise at least $200,000 in repairs to keep the building operable.

Carl Rostek, the Post’s operations manager, said the building is historically valuable to the town.

“We’re an integral part of this community and the history of this post and veterans who’ve died over the years,” he said. “In 1942, if you can imagine the sleepy little town of Chatham could lose over 300 of its men [in WWII], is unbelievable.”

The facility was renamed after three Chatham servicemen who died in the war.

Rostek said the facility does make some money on its operations, but the looming costs of capital improvement projects are just too much to handle at once.

Among those expenses are accelerating costs of liquor liability insurance and building upkeep.

However, they did obtain a 501 c3 status in February, allowing them to accept tax-deductible donations.

Checks can be mailed to: Brown James Buck Memorial Association, 150 George Ryder Road, Chatham, MA, 02633.

The fundraiser will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Post. It will feature live music from The Total Strangers.
