HARWICH – The Harwich Democratic Town Committee will be discussing ranked voting at its next meeting. Ranked voting is a system where voters rank candidates in order of preference when more than two candidates are on the ballot.
If no candidate receives a simple majority an elimination process begins using a formula based on the number of first place votes the candidate received.
The candidate receiving the fewest number of first place votes is eliminated. Next, each vote cast for that candidate will be transferred to the voter’s next-ranked choice among the remaining candidates.
This elimination process will continue until one candidate receives a majority and is deemed the winner.
The process is used in several U.S. cities, Cambridge, San Francisco, and Berkeley, CA., among them. The Harwich Committee will host a seminar on the process at a meeting Saturday, September 8th at 10 am at the Harwich Community Center on Oak St.
