Reconstruction, Widening Proposed for Wareham’s Cranberry Highway

WAREHAM – State transportation officials are planning a major reconstruction project on Cranberry Highway in Wareham.

Representatives from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation joined town officials for a public meeting at Wareham Town Hall earlier this month to discuss the plans, which call for redesign and improvement of about 1.5 miles of the road.

The project would widen a section of the road to four lanes with a raised median, while installing sidewalks and curbing and improving lighting and drainage in the area.

“The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is committed to building and maintaining a transportation infrastructure that is safe and efficient for all who use our roadways, bridges, bicycle facilities and pedestrian paths, while maintaining the integrity of the environment,” said MassDOT Chief Engineer Patricia Leavenworth. “We recognize that road and bridge construction can create inconveniences for the public…Please be assured that we will undertake no project without addressing the concerns of the comment.

State officials are currently reviewing the comments taken from the public at the February 15 meeting and a meeting last week before the town’s conservation commission.

The work is slated to begin in 2019.
