HYANNIS – A voluntary vessel speed restriction zone has been established around Cape Cod Bay to protect critically endangered North Atlantic right whales.
The Dynamic Management Area was instituted to protect an aggregation of 6 whales sighted in the area on December 11.
Mariners are asked to travel around the area or transit through the Bay at 10 knots or less.
The restriction zone is in effect through December 26.
The estimated population of the species is just over 400.
