HYANNIS – Regional Transportation officials and all 15 Cape towns have begun discussions on ways to improve transportation for seniors as their population continues to increase.
The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority and Council on Aging Directors met recently to brainstorm ideas for increased collaboration on transportation programs for seniors.
Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority Administrator Tom Cahir said feedback from the meeting included the importance of transportation to the health and well-being of seniors aging in place.
“It was a great opportunity just to talk about the needs in all 15 Cape towns and the 400 square miles that we all represent here,” Cahir said.
The transit authority and the councils on aging will continue discussions to make sure seniors are best served by the transportation opportunities available.
“We are going to continue to communicate. We are going to have them in a couple times a year,” Cahir said. “We’re going to share ideas and look at how the RTA can be more helpful.”
Cahir said the effort is timely and important as the region’s demographics continue to get older.
“I think the Cape will be ahead of everybody else as we move into the next decade or so,” Cahir said.
During the meeting, the transit authority also announced a “Free Fare Fridays” program.
Seniors 60 and older can ride fixed bus routes for free on Fridays during the holiday season from Black Friday through the end of the year. The initiative is intended to provide seniors an opportunity to experience the fixed route bus system serving all 15 Cape Cod towns.
