HYANNIS – The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority has announced a $1.57 million payment to the Steamship Authority for their share of federal revenues, generated from a joint transportation initiative.

The initiative, which began back in August of 2015, was meant to capture previously untapped federal formula funding and required a close collaboration between the CCRTA and the SSA.

“I asked my Grants Manager to go down and work with the FTA, and work with the Steamship Authority to see if they would be interested in providing the information necessary that triggers the funding and it resulted in $3.4 million new dollars coming back into our region. We are very happy to share some of those funds,” said Tom Cahir, CCRTA Administrator.

This new federal funding came at a good time as the Steamship has been suffering for the past year with numerous technical problems, leading to numerous cancelled trips through this past winter and spring.

“There aren’t really any constraints with the funds, they can do what they want with it, preventive maintenance efforts will be contemplated, we as the CCRTA are not involved in that, we just provide the resources for it, hopefully we will continue to do that going forward,” said Cahir.

The CCRTA and the SSA continue to work closely as members of a multi-modal committee intended to enhance coordination and collaboration opportunities between, and among transportation modes.
