HYANNIS – The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority has received a top rating from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration. A Baseline Assessment for Security Enhancement Review recently conducted by Homeland Security officials looked at areas like public awareness, cyber-security, facility security and management.

“To get the highest rating from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in terms of every aspect of what we are doing, I think, is a strong message to anybody that might be having any thoughts about any kind of disruption,” said Tom Cahir, the administrator of the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority.

Homeland Security officials conducted the comprehensive review over a two-week period and looked at everything and worked closely with the facilities manager, according to Cahir.

“I think there was like 17 to 20 different categories and descriptions they went through with me and the vast majority were 95 or 100 percent, 88 percent,” Cahir said.

The CCRTA also recently replaced and expanded its surveillance system. High-definition cameras cover the Hyannis Transportation Center and the long-term parking lots on the property.

A remaining step in the installation of the system will provide a surveillance video feed to the Barnstable Police Department.

“Our goal has always been to provide a safe environment for our visitors and passengers,” Cahir said. “We are actively involved in the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee and have a plan in place for security threats or uncontrollable natural events.”
