Regional Transit Authority Tackles Parking Issues in Hyannis

HYANNIS – Parking solutions, both in the short term and long-term, were a major topic during a recent Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority Advisory Board meeting.

Tom Cahir, the administrator for the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, said the organization is working with the town and transportation partners to address the parking challenges in Hyannis.

“We have 10 or 12 acres here where we are planning a Transit Oriented Development with mixed use development and a number of things that would complement Main Street as opposed to compete with Main Street,” he said.

Cahir says the authority is entering into a three-year overflow parking agreement with Hy-Line and the Steamship Authority.

They authority is also discussing another possible future fix to parking issues.

“In the long-term, well I should say mid-term because it’s three to five years, planning to build a parking garage on this site with perhaps four-stories to address a lot of the parking challenges the community is facing,” he said.

The Authorities Advisory Board also approved a $13.9 million budget.

Work is also underway to develop a ride sharing pilot program with Zip Car.
