Rehabilitated Seals to be Released at Scusset Beach

SANDWICH – The National Marine Life Center is releasing three rehabilitated harbor seal pups back into the wild this week and the public is invited to come along.

At the time of their arrival, the pups could not survive on their own. NMLC staff and volunteers had to teach the young animals how to swim and eat fish, as the pups’ mothers were not present to teach them these critical life lessons.

“Johnny Appleseal” was NMLC’s first male harbor seal pup of the season. He was rescued in Plymouth, MA by the New England Aquarium on April 13th. He was premature and therefore still had his white, fluffy lanugo coat, which should be shed in utero.

“Jane Goodseal” was brought to us a few days later on April 18th. She was rescued by IFAW in Sandwich, MA. Similar to Johnny, she was premature and had the fluffy lanugo coat.

“Sealvia Earle” was rescued from Jonesport, ME by College of the Atlantic on May 31st. Originally in a separate pen, she was eventually moved into the pool with Johnny and Jane so the three could socialize and learn from each other.

The seals will be returned to the wild on Wednesday, August 9th at 6:30 PM at Scusset Beach State Reservation in Sandwich.
