YARMOUTH – Cape residents and cancer survivors will gather Saturday at Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

The 24 hour event starts at 10 a.m. and raises money for cancer research, services and advocacy.

“It’s sort of a fun event but it’s a serious event,” said Susie Frost, the event lead. “There’s lots of laughter. There’s definitely some tears but it’s sort of a good, hopeful event.”

Relay for Life features several special ceremonies throughout the 24 hours including the Survivors’ Dinner at 5 p.m.

“Survivors can come with their caregivers and have a complimentary meal,” Frost said. “After their dinner they get to take a victory lap with a survivor t-shirt and they take their own lap around the track which is always fun to see.”

The event also features a lamination ceremony at 9 p.m. as the track is illuminated with dozens of candles set in paper bags that can be decorated with remembrances, wishes of good luck and thanks.

“That’s really a beautiful time to be there,” Frost said.

Some of the funds raised from the event will benefit the Hope Lodge in Boston, which helps provide free rooms to patients who travel more than 100 miles for treatment.

“It’s a really good thing for the Cape because we are over 100 miles from the Boston hospitals,” Frost said. “So anybody going through treatment in Boston can go to Hope Lodge and stay there for free during their treatment which is pretty huge.”

Those interested in participating can register before the event online at www.relayforlife.org/midcapema or can come down anytime during the 24 hour period.

“All the teams are on there and you can join the team,” Frost said. “You can join just as a survivor and come to the dinner or you can just sponsor people while you are on that website.”
