EASTHAM – Renovations will begin later this month on the Chapel in the Pines in Eastham.
Plans include a replication of the original Victorian roof cresting, office space and a cedar roof.
Over $200,000 from the Community Preservation Fund grant will go to pay for the renovations.
The Nauset Fellowship have been operating out of the Chapel since 1979, holding Sunday services each week.
“It’s really a beautiful building and it’s a great opportunity to preserve it for future generations,” said Nauset Fellowship President Bob Seay.
Construction of the Chapel took place in 1889 under Captain Edward Penniman, and it operated as a Universalist Church until 1936.
Recent issues caused the group to approach the town for funds to make repairs, but the significance of the building caused organizers to embrace bigger plans.
The new plans, which also include a deck and updated kitchen come at a cost of $375,000.
The Nauset Fellowship hopes to raise their portion, $150,000, by June.
“It’s part of Eastham’s historic town center, so I think that the community will come out and support our effort and hopefully they’ll be very happy with the results,” said Seay.
