CHATHAM – A 60-year tradition of local theater will be put on hold this summer on the Outer Cape.
The Monomoy Theatre will be closed throughout the summer as it undergoes renovations, according to a Facebook post by Artistic Director Alan Rust. He wrote that the project will take time and the theater would “not be able to have a season of plays this summer.”
“What I’ve heard is that their plan is to renovate the building, bring it completely up to date – which is really necessary, and then run it year-round. I got the feeling that it would be a little public auditorium for the community,” said Rust.
“Once they redo it all, it will work year-round and be completely up to date and modern.”
Rust says the project’s start date hasn’t been determined yet. Alexandra Properties, who has agreed to purchase the Chatham-based theater, will oversee renovations once the deal is finalized.
The Steidner Family Trust was prompted to sell the property after the University of Hartford had terminated its lease following health and safety violations. The lease officially expired on March 15.
A $2 million bid originally placed by Monomoy Theater Inc. to purchase the theater was refused. The property was later listed at $3.95 million.
