WOODS HOLE – Barnstable, Dukes, Nantucket State Representative Dylan Fernandes kicked off his 2018 re-election campaign Sunday in Woods Hole.
Fernandes, a Woods Hole Democrat who is finishing his first term in office, helped to secure a half million dollars in the state budget for the region, passed an amendment specific to the Islands in the marijuana bill and was the first new legislator to pass a standalone bill through the House.
“We came in. We worked really, really hard,” Fernandes said.
“We listened to the residents in the district and we got a lot done. So we are looking to build upon those accomplishments going forward.”
Fernandes said there are three core issues in the district that he will continue to focus: the opioid crisis, affordable housing and coastal resiliency.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do and we are ready to roll up our sleeves and get to it,” he said.
Fernandes said it feels good to kick off the 2018 campaign and he expects it to be less daunting.
He brought together a large coalition of grassroots activists from across the district during his first campaign and knocked on more than 8,000 doors and made over 20,000 phone calls.
“We are starting to build that coalition back up again,” he said. “It’ll be a little easier this time because we have all those relationships and volunteers.”
No challengers have entered the race for the seat.
