HARWICH – Researchers worked to collect data to provide a “snapshot” of life beneath the surface of Pleasant Bay last month.
Pleasant Bay Community Boating and Northeastern University’s Ocean Genome Legacy Center held “Bioblitz” on May 25, the second sampling of DNA of marine life in the bay.
Northeastern’s OGL project is an international genome initiative dedicated to collecting and preserving DNA of the diverse marine species in the world’s oceans.
The point in time collection will provide scientists and educators free access to data to more precisely measure global change, biodiversity and the success of restoration efforts.
Students from Monomoy Regional High School participated in the windy and wet condition to collect marine specimens.
They identified, documented and prepared tissue samples for DNA “barcoding” in Pleasant Bay Community Boating’s Boathouse.
In the classroom, the Monomoy students will analyze results using bioinformatics research software and learn how to document changes in local biodiversity.
