CHATHAM – Researchers have spotted the first great white shark of the season off Monomoy.
The 11-foot shark was about 300 yards off-shore and had just attacked a seal. It was photographed by spotter pilot Wayne Davis.
State shark researcher Dr. Greg Skomal was able to video the shark with an underwater go-pro camera.
The images show the shark near a pool of blood with what appears to be a piece of seal in its jaw.
A social media post says they’re looking to see if that shark had been identified before.
Skomal and the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy began the 2016 research season last week.
The conservancy is in the third year of a five year study of great white sharks off Cape Cod.
Last year, 141 great whites were identified in Cape waters which was an increase from 68 in 2014, the first year of the study.
Of the sharks identified last year, 101 were sharks that had not been previously spotted.
They also tagged 24 great whites last year which was up from 18 the year before.
Researchers will be out on the water through the end of October.
