CHATHAM – Researchers have tagged the ninth great white shark of the season Thursday off the coast of Cape Cod.

State Shark expert Dr. Greg Skomal, who is working with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, tagged the 11-footer off Monomoy.

The conservancy is in the third year of a five-year white shark population study.

Researchers tagged 24 sharks off the Cape last year, which was an increase from 18 in 2014.

Last year, 141 great whites were identified in Cape waters which was an increase from 68 in 2014.

Of the sharks identified last year, 101 were sharks that had not been previously spotted.
