CHATHAM – Researchers will visit Muskeget and Monomoy Islands this month to study recently born seal pups.

Gray seal pupping season generally runs from mid-December to early February, with a peak time in mid-January.

NOAA Fisheries’ Northeast Fisheries Science Center researchers will conduct fixed wing drone and hexacopter surveys on Muskeget to estimate seal abundance, distribution and to estimate the age of the pups.

They will also attach flipper tags to pups and collect biological samples at both locations.

Similar research has been conducted the last six years.
